Seattle Renewable Energy Kicks off their Fall 2008 Meeting Series with Berlin renewable energy consultant Jens Bömer of Ecofys (www.ecofys.com).

During his presentation Jens will address:

What is the German Aachen Model or the Full Cost Rates that recently influenced Washington State’s current solar legislation?
What are Germany’s Feed-in Tariffs that influenced Jay Inslee’s Renewable Energy legislation?
How has Photovoltaic and Wind Power aggregation taken off in Germany and other countries?
What can we learn from Germany and their experience?
What technical challenges are related to the integration of renewable energies into our electricity networks and what services does Ecofys provide related to them?

Hear first hand from Jens what this could mean for citizens concerned about a clean and sustainable energy future.
Also we’ll take a brief video look at where we are in terms of Washington state’s Renewable Energy Portfolio standard.

Jens Bömer works part-time as a Consultant in the Power Systems and Markets department at the Ecofys office in Berlin (www.ecofys.com). Ecofys is an internationally leading consulting company on renewable energies, energy efficiency and climate change. Jens is responsible for power flow and dynamic grid studies and manages several projects on innovations in electrical power systems. Due to his former work experience he has thorough knowledge about the intersection between technical and political decision making.
Before Jens joined Ecofys in September 2007, he worked for two years as a consultant to the German Environment Ministry and dealt with technical questions regarding the grid integration of wind turbines and other renewable energies. He gained thorough knowledge about the German Renewable Energy Resources Act (which turned the Aachen Model nationwide in the year 2000). Eventually he was the Ministry's main advisor for the regulations to improve the grid integration of wind turbines in the 2008 amendment of the German Renewable Energy Resources Act. During his studies he spent six months at the University of Chile and worked in two projects for the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) that were related to the grid integration of wind energy into the Chilean interconnected system. During this period, he proved his Spanish skills related to technical terms and presentation style. This also helped him later at Ecofys in successfully managing a grid connection study for a small wind farm in Costa Rica, including a field trip to the site. Related to the Spanish RES-E area, he gained experience by supporting his colleagues in a small project on grid connection possibilities for offshore wind farms in the Mediterranean Sea.
Jens holds a diploma in Electrical Engineering from University of Dortmund where he specialised in power systems and renewable energies. During his studies he contributed as a volunteer to the press relation work of the local Greenpeace group of Dortmund. Recently, Jens started working on a PhD in electrical engineering at Technical University of Delft, The Netherlands, complementing his four-days-a-week part time job at Ecofys.

We are very privileged to be able to host Jens at our meeting this month. If you have ever wondered how we stack up against what is going on in Europe this is an amazing opportunity to learn first hand, and speak to an expert. Please RSVP in advance so we can plan appropriately, I anticipate we'll have a big group for this meeting.

I'm psyched to see what the rest of the world is doing regarding solar energy policy and action. Action being the key word here....
