Since the Off-Grid subgroup has started picking up quickly this year, and it looks like there may be sufficient interest (Thanks for the suggestion, Phil!), let's talk about the eco-community / eco-village concept at this upcoming meeting. I spent quite a bit of time talking with 2 separate groups of people over the past 1-2 years about the possibility of going in together on an eco community. In both cases, we found that we had to work through the same initial sets of questions, and I can bring these with me, along with some books on the subject, just to help kick off the discussion. If anyone else has had experience with this as well, please bring what you know. - Robin Additional topics to be discussed: What is Earth Hour 2008? (Julie) Brief announcements about several upcoming green living fairs in the metroplex (Robin) Please let me know if there are any additional topics that anyone would like to discuss?

Please come to our next meetup where you'll hear about what some of our new subgroups will be doing this year. We'll discuss the current status of the groups, how you can get involved, and what the next few meetups will offer. Bring your ideas and enthusiasm! Also, I'll talk a little bit about my tour of an earth berm house in Sachse (which is for sale, by the way), and I'll bring photos as well. - Robin After that, we'll jump into our usual varied conversation on topics ranging from electric cars to insulating houses to peak oil to putting up wind turbines. A little history from last month: In January, we met and decided to create multiple subgroups to encourage greater depth on topics and also to take some pressure off the new organizer (who is not retired). The field of Alternative Energy is just huge and we were faced with two options: 1) have a 'light' introductory talk on each topic 1x or 2x a year or 2) go with subgroups that could go into greater depth. We decided on the latter. As we get these subgroups underway, their organizers will be posting the meetups at this site. Everyone is welcome to participate in the events of any subgroups. Three subgroups that we have defined and are setting up: Hardware Implementation - Steve Ivy Green Business - Debbie Winters Building Your Off-Grid or Semi-Off Grid House - Robin Sowton Some groups that we're still looking for people to lead: State/Local Laws Affecting Use of Alternative Energy Home Energy We'll also have some of our in-house experts speaking occasionally during the year on topics like battery technology (Jim Trudeau). We'll also post events here for the Electric Car Association (Jon Brecher). If you have a specific topic on an area of alternative energy that you could present at a meetup or you would like to organize a subgroup on a topic that isn't listed here, please contact the organizer (Robin). We're also in the process of setting up some Yahoo mailing lists.

It's a new year and we want to find out what everyone is interested in. Are you interested in the meetups because ...you want to build your house off-grid? ...meet others to build/invent something in someone's garage? ...meet others who have green businesses or want to network or change careers to start/enter a green business? This leads to the question: Do you want to participate in a group that addresses one of these things only every 5 months... or addresses it every month. We're looking at the possibility of breaking out into subgroups with multiple events per month. (And in this case, we'll need more assistant organizers.) Please complete the polls before the next meetup (especially the poll question: 'I am most interested in this group because...') at http://alternativeen ergy.meetup.com/153/ polls/112671/ Here's the agenda for Jan. 26th meetup: (1) Let's discuss the poll results and whether we might want to create specific sub-groups (2) Let's brainstorm for ideas of things to do for the upcoming year (films? field trips? book/film lending library?) (3) Announcement of upcoming events related to alternative energy (4) Finally... there will be plenty of time remaining for our usual informal discussions on alternative energy, green building, off-grid ideas, and other subjects you want to bring to the discussion. Please let me know if you have other agenda items that you would like to add. Also... we're trying a new venue... The String Bean at the NW corner of Coit and Spring Valley. They're a home-cooking restaurant that has been in the area for 25 years. Reasonably-priced. Please bring your appetite--because they're giving us the room with the expectation that a majority of people will be buying lunch or appetizers.

So far... 1) I'd like to go over some of the content of a seminar I'm doing for Live Green in Plano: 'Things You Can Do To Make Your Home More Energy Efficient.' and put a few questions out to the group. - Robin 2) Announcement of some upcoming events in our area. 3) Let's brainstorm ideas for activities for next year!

From Robin: As some of you may have heard, Don is feeling ill. If for some reason Don isn't able to make it on Saturday, I told him that I would facilitate and that he shouldn't worry about the meetup if he is still feeling ill and in the hospital. Some of the things on the agenda: From Steve: 1) Establishing one or two email lists 2) Giving Phil time to talk about vehicle aerodynamics 3) Ask group to vote on the small house or larger facility approach to a first permanent home. 4) Consider voiting on a schedule for the second (Bi-weekly) meeting - although we may want to wait for Don on this. 5) Discuss what http://www.tano.org. .. can do for our group From Robin: 1) Discuss an activity that the Dallas Sierra Club is doing in 2008 that some people might be interested in getting involved in (5 minutes) (And no, it's not a green home tour :-) ) 2) Provide a very brief summary on the recent Water Conservation conference that was held in October (as it relates to alternative energy) (5-10 minutes) 3) Suggest a possible speaker for the group (2-5 minutes) IF ANYONE HAS OTHER THINGS TO ADD, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. And hopefully, Don will be feeling much better on Saturday and will be able to join us.
