FOR SIGNONSANDIEGO

Every year, La Mesa hosts the grandaddy of San Diego Oktoberfests. Celebrating its 33rd festival and racking up attendance totals of 200,000 for the event, La Mesa's Oktoberfest is a time-tested block party sure to please even the most seasoned lager lover.

This celebration is mirrored after the famed Munich Oktoberfest, so expect hardy food and drink and enough dancing to make you silly down to your boots. If that's not enough to make you track down a green Alps hat with feather, how about some shopping? Hundreds of booths will line La Mesa Boulevard from Date Avenue to Fourth Street, along with more vendors on sections of Allison and Palm avenues.

The happy place
Let's face it, you haven't lived until you've seen costume-clad, beer-totin' dance fiends waltz and polka their way into a happy place. To experience this giddiness, head to Allison Avenue, between Palm Avenue and Pine Street, to the municipal parking lot, where the blessed beer garden festivities await. Jog and grog to your heart's content as German dancers twirl their way through the afternoon.

Adults can find grown-up fun post-sunset on Friday and Saturday nights, as bands and DJs lay down beer-busting tunes. The taps will flow, for a fee, until 11 p.m. on both nights.

This year's schedule
Friday, Oct. 6, from 11 a.m. to midnight
Saturday, Oct. 7, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Sunday, Oct. 8, from noon to 6 p.m.

Parking
Parking's tough and you want to clank steins with your new best friends, right? So why not ride the trolley?

Take the Orange line to the La Mesa Boulevard station at the corner of Spring Street and La Mesa Boulevard.
