WHAT: Announcing Electric Drag In 2008

This is the first-ever-international-exclusively-electric-drive-only event.
There will be e-motorcross racing, electric car drag racing, a village
energy vendor booth area, electra-city camp grounds and networking. The
latest electric drive technology will be available for close inspection and
purchase. There will be races to see which car goes the fastest and which
car goes the farthest. There will of course be trophies and prizes and they
say they will have the largest array of electric vehicles ever assembled.
There will be competitors from across north america coming to the race.

Imagine a drag race with no internal combustion engines polluting the air
with noise and exhaust!

Birch Aquarium Special Presentation: Science Solutions for a Planet in Peril

Scripps Institution of Oceanography/UC San Diego
Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008
6:30-8 p.m.
Science Solutions for a Planet in Peril
Charlie Kennel, Scripps Oceanography distinguished professor
Public: $8
Students/Educators: $5

How can we solve the environmental challenges facing Earth? Join distinguished professor Charles Kennel of UC San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography for a special Jan. 24 presentation at Birch Aquarium at Scripps as he explores ways that scientists can use technology to create solutions that address climate change, biodiversity loss, sea-level rise, drought and flood cycles, and other environmental challenges.

In the last half century, advances in economic and social well-being came at the cost of vastly increased use of natural resources. Faced now with a highly threatened environment, natural and social scientists must work more closely together. Kennel will discuss how the ongoing convergence of earth science, biology and social science (enabled by information technology) could lead to a new awareness of Earthıs systems that will enable coordinated responses to the global environmental challenges that face us all now and in the future.

Kennel is a distinguished professor of atmospheric science at Scripps Oceanography. He was the founding director of the UCSD Environment and Sustainability Initiative (ESI), an all-campus effort that embraces teaching, research, campus operations and public outreach, and the chairman of ESIıs International Advisory Board. Kennel was the ninth director of Scripps Oceanography, serving from 1998 to 2006.

History of the International Electric Vehicle Symposium
The International Electric Vehicle Symposium and Exposition (EVS) series, organized by the World Electric Vehicle Association (WEVA), has long been recognized as the premier event for academic, government and industry professionals involved in electric drive technologies. The EVS series began in 1969 as an academic forum for global networking and the exchange of technical information. As electric drive technologies progressed from the classrooms and laboratories into the marketplace, EVS blossomed into an event that is both academic and business oriented.

Today, the EVS series is recognized as the global electric transportation industry's premier and largest forum, showcasing all forms of technologies in the market place and on the drawing boards--from low speed battery electric vehicles to fuel cell electric buses. The event attracts academic, government and industry leaders from around the world who are interested in exploring and understanding the technical, policy and market challenges to a paradigm shift toward use of electric transportation technologies.

Rotating between regions of the world, each EVS event is hosted by one of the three members of WEVA. Events held in the Asia-Pacific region are hosted by the Electric Vehicle Association of the Asia Pacific (EVAAP); those held in Europe are hosted by the European Electric Road Vehicle Association (AVERE), and those held in the Western Hemisphere are hosted by the Electric Drive Transportation Association (EDTA).

COURTESY NOTICE

Posting Event from SD Renewable Energy Society:

You are invited to the next presentation in our four
part series on the new concentrating solar power (CSP)
technologies on Wednesday, November 14th at the Aztec
Athletic Center Auditorium at SDSU (see directions
below).

We are pleased to present Robert Liden, the General
Manager and Executive Vice-President of the Stirling
Energy Systems (SES) Company, who will speak to us on
the first commercial dish-Stirling power plants.

SES is currently under contract to build two new,
large dish-Stirling power plants in southern
California. One for SCE for 500 to 850 MW and a
second plant for SDG&E for 300 to 900 MW. Power
Purchase Agreements have been signed with both
utilities and construction is to start next Fall in
Imperial County. The total of 1750 MW would be
provided by 70,000 dish-Stirling 25 kW modules and
these installations would be over four times larger
than the current world capacity of solar thermal power
plants.

Mr. Liden will discuss the technology of the
dish-Stirling module and the phased commercialization
to achieve low cost. He will also address the SES
planned approach to deal with the uncertainties of
operation and maintenance costs of a new power plant.

This talk will be informative since we here in San
Diego have heard so little factual information about
this new technology. The dish-Stirling power plant has
had local notoriety since it is the new solar
technology being build in Imperial County and claimed
by SDG&E as one of the reasons for the Sunrise Power
Link. Opponents of the Sunrise Power Link have
opposed all the SDG&E stated reasons for the
transmission line and have painted this new solar
technology with a broad brush in very unflattering
colors. This talk should inform us all about this
technology.

The next talk in this CSP series will focus on
concentrating PV and will be given in January.

After that, we will then present the newly emerging
commercial central receiver (power tower) solar
technology. Luz II has signed a contract with PG&E to
build the first commercial plant sized between 100 and
500 MW.

Finally, there will be a summary presentation
that displays the similarities and differences of
these four concentrating technologies, and suggest how
they would be used to support an electric grid.

We feel that this is an exciting and informative
series on CSP that will give us an overview of this
important leg of the very stable renewables table that
we all expect to be eating our energy supper from in
the near future.

The dish-Stirling is on the cusp of becoming a major
new commercial reality and would be added along side
the parabolic trough concentrating solar plant as a
commercial option. They would be available along with
the existing renewable electricity generating
technologies such as geothermal, wind, bio-mass/gas,
small hydro and on-site PV.

See you Wednesday, November 14th at 7 PM. Bring a
friend to hear some factual information about the
emerging dish-Stirling technology.

Understanding Atmospheric Oxygen: The Other Half of the Global
Carbon Dioxide Story
Ralph Keeling
Scripps Climate Researcher

Increases in global carbon dioxide should be mirrored by small
but significant decreases in atmospheric oxygen ? the other
half of the global respiratory cycle. Join Dr. Ralph Keeling to
learn how his precise measurements have shown the concentration
of oxygen in the atmosphere is decreasing slowly from year to
year. Explore the implications of this decrease and discover
how these data are allowing scientists to place constraints on
the global carbon cycle.
