Every year nearly 29,000,000 lbs of grease enters into the Chesapeake Bay from the DC Metro Area. This grease increases our taxes on city maintenance because it solidifies and clogs sewage pipes. When this occurs, sewage overflows throughout residential areas of DC (see graphic at bottom).
To fight this injustice, SOLVE CO-OP is launching a pilot residential grease recycling program (Grease for Good), that will educate the community and recuperate vast quantities of grease from residential areas. We are focused on trying to motivate the community to action by making them active stakeholders within our operation. Our system not only collects but tracks the amounts individuals are recycling. Once the oil has been sold to market, profits will be converted to "carbon off-set credits" for participants, which can be used to pay to offset your carbon footprint on travel, work, or attributed towards your electricity bill. As a social cooperative, SOLVE (Solutions and Opportunities through Leadership, Vigor and Entrepreneurship) seeks the immediate benefit and social integration of citizens through business activities. Our first initiative will be this residential grease recycling program and hopefully growing into other forums from there. We are looking for people to participate in our pilot program- as "greacyclers". We need 1,000 apartment dwellers, home owners, and government run housing participants, in order to get funding through the federal stimulus program. Through our partnership with Live Green (www.livegreen.net) we are offering discounts at area businesses for participating within our program. If you are interested in participating please reply to this post or at contactus@solvellc.org Feel free to post any questions or comments to this note. For your review is an example of our recycling receptacles. One of these receptacles will be good for an entire neighborhood or apartment building. They are fabricated locally, which creates green jobs right here in the district, and they are made from recycled materials. We look forward to hearing from you!
