Hello Everybody, I'll be giving presentations on the three things I've been doing since the last meeting: (1) Mold in buildings - a real problem when structures are tightened up to save on energy but no allowance is made for indoor environmental quality; and, (2) Infrared Thermography - useful in finding energy leaks in a building shell; and maybe also, (3) Ground Source Heat Pump Technology - a real winner; GSHPs are so efficient, giving out up to three times more energy than one puts in, they almost violate the laws of thermodynamics. Almost. NOTE THE SLIGHTLY LATER TIME. Date: Tuesday, November 6, 2007 Time: 7:30 PM Place: COSI Restaurant Broadway & 76th Street New York, NY See you there. Sincerely, John Howell

Hello Everybody, I returned from Wisconsin today. I had a chance to visit the Midwest Renewable Energy Association in Custer, Wisconsin. It is one of only three places in the USA offering extensive hands on training in renewables. They are especially in wind, even training people to climb those high towers to service the turbines. Really interesting. In case you're wondering, the other two are (1) Solar Energy International in Carbondale and Paonia, Colorado and (2) Real Goods in Hopwood, California. Why isn't there someplace just a little bit closer? I planned to arrange for the meeting at the Microsoft Briefing Center, but despite contacting them since last week, we still have no confirmation. They didn't say no, but they haven't said yes for sure either. So, we'll have to gather in a back up location. It won't be as good as Microsoft, but what can I say. Date: Tuesday, September 26, 2007 Time: 6:45 PM Place: COSI Restaurant Broadway & 76th Street New York, NY See you there. Sincerely, John Howell

Hello Everybody, The next meeting of the New York City Alternative Energy Study Group will be: Date: Tuesday, April 24, 2007 Time: 7:00 PM Place: Microsoft Briefing Center CARNEGIE ROOM 1290 Sixth Avenue (between 51 & 52 sts) 6th floor New York, NY PRESENTER: Mr. Asit Patel is a dynamic speaker and an experienced energy engineer. He is currently the head of training and energy audit services at the Association for Energy Affordability (www.aeanyc.org). SUBJECT: Water Conservation ? What can be done to lower water consumption Water conservation may seem a bit removed from energy conservation, but the two are related. Clean water used to be abundant and cheap, but that is ending. Delivering clean water is requiring the use of steadily more energy. The topics: (1) COSTS: How much does water cost in New York City. How much does a leak waste, and how much does that cost. The rate structure in NYC ? flat rate vs. metered rate ? will also be discussed. (2) CONSERVATION OPPORTUNITIES: What we can do to lower water consumption using new technologies, high efficiency fixtures, and water leak detection techniques, among other things. (3) RESOURCES: There will be discussion on resources, including free water audits from the DEP and water conservation kits from the DEP. See you there. Sincerely, John Howell

January agenda: Hello Everybody, The NYC Alternative Energy Study Group will meet next Tuesday: Date: Tuesday, January 23, 2007 Time: 6:45 PM to about 9:00 PM Place: Microsoft New York Briefing Center 6th floor, Palace Conference Room 1290 Sixth Avenue (between 51 & 52 Sts) RSVP: Please let me know if you plan to come. We'll have two Presentations on important subjects: (1) Geothermal Energy The presentation will describe how geothermal energy is harvested and used to heat and cool homes and businesses. There will be information on state and federal incentives for this type of energy. Finally, there will be a discussion on the type of training and certifications necessary to install approved systems. Presenter: Jonathan Flynn trained as a Marine Biologist specializing in algae and is now working in NYC as a finish carpenter. Jonathan is a regular member of the NYC Alternative Energy Study Group. (2) Structural Insulated Panels SIPs are more energy efficient than traditional insulation used in buildings. They are earthquake and hurricane-proof, and wind, snow-load and fire resistant. They do not mold or rot and are unattractive to termites and rodents. Strong and light, SIPs can be used to build a house much faster than by the usual stick building construction, saving labor costs. The American Federation of Scientists, MIT, and the UN are sponsoring the use of SIPs in developing countries. SIPs made by several companies will be described. Samples will be shown. Presenter: Shannon Rothenberger is a writer, artist, teacher, and editor, mostly of Native American history. She is interested in low-cost safe energy efficient buildings. Two weeks ago she attended a geothermal workshop in Tennessee and took a side trip to a SIP factory in Florence, Alabama. Shannon is a regular member of the NYC Alternative Energy Study Group. See you there. Sincerely, John Howell
